Sinterklaas Hilversum 2006

Sinterklaas is a festivity in The Netherlands for the children, that focuses
on the birthday of Sinterklaas on December the 5th.
Sinterklaas is St. Nicholas, who dresses in a long red robe, rides a white
horse and wears a miter, as he was the bishop of Mira in the 4th century.
He was known for his goodness and generosity. That is probably why this festivity
is marked by giving each other presents. The evening of the 4th
of December is when his helpers, the 'Pieten', bring around the
presents. Kids have to leave their shoes by the fireplace
(these days the heater)
and leave a little something for the horse. In return they get a small gift,
which can be a material gift or candy. It is not exactly known
why the 'Pieten' have black faces. The most common explanation is
that they are black from the coal in the chimneys (old days).
The pictures below are taken at the arrival of 'Sinterklaas' which is usually
a few weeks before the actual event.
