Peter Rice's story
The Bateman Rooms in Caius
Peter Rice's tapes
1. I was "President" of the Cambridge University Tape Recording Society at the time of the recordings (small detail!). 2. The live concert happened before the solo recordings and was in 1968. It was made in the Bateman Room at Caius College [now agreed with Robert K] and was not any of the May Ball performances. 3. The accompanying musicians at the live performance were made up of a string quartet, double bass, 2 flutes and horn (doubling Farfisa organ) - doesn't really constitute an orchestra! 4. For the solo recordings later that year, I used headphones for monitoring at the first session in Nick's room in Fitzwilliam. The point about the borrowed Peterhouse rooms used for the second session was that I could set up the bedroom as a control room with loudspeakers for monitoring while he performed in the main room with the doors shut. 5. I offered to play Nick's guitar (and sing!) while he went into the control room (bedroom) to see what a recording made with instrument miking would sound like. As a result of hearing this (me!), he wanted to go back to room miking (a single crossed pair of microphones not adjacent to either voice or guitar). 6. At the end of the session, I was in the control room rewinding the tape when calling to Nick via the open connecting door. There was no reply - I thought he had gone off to the toilet and would be back, but when I looked, his guitar case had gone.
The copy of the live concert tape recording has never been lost - I knew I had it, and had been playing it to myself from time to time. I had used it to learn Nick's original guitar part for "Made to love magic", as the LP studio version that I had was arranged (by Richard Hewson) with string and wind parts. What I had not realised until this year was the extent of present-day interest in Nick's music, and so I contacted Robert (via Cally) to ask if the tape I had was of interest. I had expected that they had access to the master tape I had made in 1968, but it seems that is lost. One thing I did not say in my talk was that I met Nick again backstage after his Festival Hall concert (1970?). He had been a bag of nerves. Gabrielle was there as well. I remember being particularly struck by her. |
